Examining the Role and Symbolism of the Cypress Tree in Eastern and Western Paintings
"The evergreen Cypress symbolizes dying young; the image on tombstones, the metaphor of immortality; Nakhl (palm) of mourning and wedding veil. The cypress is depicted on curtains as a sign of the curtain being lifted! It represents both the front and back, the outward and inward. The truth lies in the unity of opposites, and the cypress is the direct symbol of that."
