Does painting have the duty to voice collective pains? Should art be committed to society? Does the artist have a mission?
These were questions that were very common and powerful at the time these paintings were created. Today, the clamor of 'committed art' has subsided, but its alternative, formalist and abstract art, has also lost its momentum. The artist is free to shout or remain silent; what matters is that they create something 'artistic' beyond clichés.
